Albania is ageing. Demographic data and immigration for professional and educational purposes are amongst the main reasons presented by the World Bank.

The total population in Albania has remained the same for quite some time now – at 2.8 million residents – changing slightly over the years.

In addition, back in 2021, INSTAT estimated over 3.000 deaths more than the total births. This was the peak of a continuous fall in the Albanian birth rate.

Immigration due to work and better living conditions has also contributed in the decline of working-age citizens in our country.

These factors have been the main contributors to our ageing population. The average age of our citizens has aged by 2 years.

Albania has the highest level of unemployment when compared to our neighbouring countries which have a lower number of citizens with a university degree.

On the other hand, the Albanian government spends very little on public education, compared to every other country in the region and Europe.

The World Bank has suggested that our government increases investments into public education, the reformation of our university system as well as the creation of better conditions that urge those who have studied in foreign universities to come back home by creating more jobs for them that required a higher level of professionalism.
