Editor-in-chief at Euronews Albania, Neritan Sejamini, commented on tonight’s massive demonstration in Tirana against the Serbian president, Aleksandar Vucic and the Open Balkan initiative, by deeming it “a protest with a dualistic political nature”.
According to him, on the one side, this protest is against Vucic and the Open Balkan initiative, and on the other, it holds many other implications, which entice Berisha to show everyone the ‘real opposition’.
“They are using this event to achieve two main goals: one goal serves DP’s internal politics and the other serves the outrage against the Open Balkan initiative,” – said Sejamini.
Euronews Albania’s editor-in-chief added that although the protest is indirectly against the current Rama administration, the only way to bring him down from power is through general elections.
“Indirectly, this is a protest against Edi Rama because he is the one that has backed up this initiative. If they’re protesting against Vucic, they’re protesting against Rama, who has supported Vucic and left Kosovo out,” – he said.
Moreover, the protest according to Sejamini was intentionally kick-started at DP’s headquarters, which on the symbolic realm meant that this is the true Democratic Party, which is different from Basha’s, who has been widely accused recently, of having given up on important causes.
Sejamini also added that the protest has a strong symbolic connotation, which means that it will make headlines in the international arena, including Kosovo.
According to him, the Open Balkan initiative created one large economic market and this would be beneficial for all countries of the Western Balkans. He also argued that in the short-term, developed countries will benefit more, referring to Serbia, but in the long run, everyone will benefit.
To illustrate this, Sejamini brought up the example of Albania’s trade relations with Greece and Italy after 1990, arguing that in the beginning, it was only these two countries who benefited from the relationship through imports, but nowadays, Albania has begun exporting thus creating a balancing effect.
