“We shouldn’t have to make decisions on behalf of Albanians,” said the French ambassador to Albania, Elisabeth Barsacq during an interview for Euronews Albania when she was asked about the role that foreign ambassadors should play in Albania’s internal affairs.

“So, there are two things that act simultaneously: the intervention of foreigners which is encouraged by the desire to give a new country the confirmation that they are on the right track, and then, on the other hand, there’s the criticism that follows this intervention. I am extremely cautious and we should never have to decide on behalf of Albanian people,” – said Barsacq.

In addition, the ambassador said that foreign diplomats and ambassadors should serve their own country, and represent it while working in a foreign nation, and that they should act more like advisors, which is the true core of their mission.

“We shouldn’t forget that even though a diplomat can speak the language of a country very well and know its history or get very informed, he will always be on the surface of that country’s reality, even though we diligently try to get a deeper and more profound understanding, we will never have all the keys that would allow us to have a full grasp of things. This should never be forgotten, along with the Vienna Convention of course,” – said the French ambassador during her interview for Euronews Albania.
