“Jails have become like the solitary confinement cells of the Directorate of State Security”, declared on Friday former PM Sali Berisha in a press conference, where he took aim at the death ruled as a suicide of a 31-year-old man at a police station in the city of Kavaja.

Berisha called on Interior Minister to resign and warned of peaceful protests in front of all the country’s police stations.

“There is no free country in the world that records the deaths of two young people in police stations in a 5-year timespan. This has never happened in 30 years”, Berisha said.

“Was he put under immense psychological terror before deciding to take his own life?” Berisha asked.

Berisha asserted that there is a considerable web of robbers in the region, but that does not translate into a death sentence when detained by the law enforcement authorities.

Berisha also insinuated whether the police were directly involved in the young man’s death.

The former prime minister criticized what he referred to as the “unhumanitarian silence” among state institutions before these acts.
