The official title of Berisha’s DP faction – the Democratic Party’s Commission of Refoundation – will be left out of all documents and paperwork, including the final version of the ballot paper in the local by-elections set to take place on March 6.
This was the decision made earlier today by the Central Electoral Commission (CEC), after their assessment of SMI’s request to include the ‘Home of Freedom’ coalition in the upcoming by-elections.
CEC argued that under the current legal framework, there can’t be two DPs or Democratic Parties participating in an election, however logical their arguments may be.
“We decided to register the coalition ‘Home of Freedom’ as an electoral subject that is made up of the following parties: SMI and PDK. We consider the arguments made by DP’s representatives to be logical but they don’t have any legal basis,” – said Celibashi, head of CEC.
On February 1, the Socialist Movement for Integration (SMI) submitted an official request at CEC, to participate in these local by-elections, as a coalition which included the PDK and Berisha’s DP faction, widely known as the Commission of Refoundation.
The agreement signed by Sali Berisha and SMI’s leader, Monika Kryemadhi, states that Berisha’s Commission of Refoundation will be the official political leader of the ‘Home of Freedom’ coalition, whereas SMI will only act as an executive leader.
