Harms caused by COVID-19 in our organism last long after the patient has recovered from the disease.

Lately, medical experts have announced that the virus as significantly raised the number of patients suffering from complications with their thyroid gland in our country.

“I would get dizzy, sweat a lot at night-time, I had throat ache. I was tested and was diagnosed with a thyroid problem,” – said a young patient, who learned that he was suffering from sub-acute thyroid disease or an inflammation of the thyroids, after having contracted and recovered from the coronavirus.

This is one of the most common post-COVID reactions in the human body. But, symptoms that may start to appear after some time are auto-immune issues, mainly the Hashimoto condition that affects the thyroids or an illness known as Basidov.

Autoimmune diseases usually occur when the immune system wrongfully starts to attack the body.

Hashimoto is a condition that happens when the immunity system starts to attack the thyroid gland, thus bringing down the body’s natural hormone production.

“The reduction of the normal thyroid function in these patients makes them sluggish, more tired, while bringing about issues with their bowel movement, fever etc. However, some of them are also more withdrawn and often suffer from depression,” – said Dr. Eduard Spahiu.

Hashimoto usually flares up at 30-40 years old. According to statistics, this disease affected 10-20% of the entire world population, the majority of whom are women.

According to Dr. Spahiu, the lack of the hormone produced by the thyroid gland could cause issues with the development of the fetus in pregnant women.

How easy is the identification of this autoimmune disease?

All it takes is for patients to conduct a blood test along with an ultrasound of the thyroid gland.

Worldwide, around 30% of the population suffer from a lack of iodine. This scarcity is considered to be the main cause of the majority of preventable damages to our normal brain function.

In Albania, a law was passed back in 2008 that obliged all suppliers to supplement and fortify salt wit iodine.
