The deputy chair of the Democratic Party Enkelejd Alibeaj called on holding internal party elections in 2023, shortly after the party’s leader announced his resignation on Monday.
Alibeaj proposed holding the elections in 2023, after wrapping up the mayoral elections due next year.
“Preparing the necessary conditions for organizing the elections across all executive branches should take place right after the local elections”, said Alibeaj.
He said that the most important thing is to reunite Democrats.
According to him, Basha’s move will help ‘resolve the problem that led to a major rift’.
He also called on Berisha to step aside, in order to avoid any consequences from the US, due to his ‘non-grata status’.
DP’s parliamentary group has invited the European People’s Party to play the role of the mediator.
“The group has charged the responsible bodies into asking a mediating team from the EPP, to ease the communication and reach a long-term and acceptable solution”, concluded Alibeaj.
