Albania ranks first amongst Balkan countries in terms of the number of asylum seekers to the EU.
In its response to Euronews Albania, EUROSTAT emphasized that there was a total of 8.845 Albanians who applied for asylum for the first time last year.
This number is larger when taking into account asylum seekers who have applied previously as well, including unaccompanied minors.
In 2021, there was a total of 13.210 asylum seekers from Albania, including pending applicants.
North Macedonia ranks second after Albania but it has a considerable difference. Only 3.020 applications for asylum from North Macedonia were registered in the EU.
In addition, the country with the lowest number of asylum applications was Montenegro with only 250 applications.
The country which reports the highest number of applications from Albanian citizens was France, whereas the country with the highest number of underage applicants was Belgium, where 20 Albanian minors applied for asylum in 2021.
In total, 55 minors applied for asylum in the EU from our country and 25 from Kosovo.
