On Wednesday, procedures for the election of the country’s new president will officially start.
At 12:30 in the afternoon, the Leader’s Conference will discuss and settle a date for the first found of voting for the election of the new head of state.
The ruling Socialist Party has proposed May 10th as the start date for the first special session, whereas the Democratic Party has yet to come out with an official proposal.
If during the first round of voting, none of the candidates is able to receive at least 84 votes, then a second round will take place no longer than 7 days later.
The second round will also require a minimum of 84 votes.
The different parties have the possibility to vote on a consensual name until the 3rd round, otherwise the ruling majority can singlehandedly choose a president during the 4th and 5th rounds, with a minimum of 71 votes.
The entire procedure of electing the new president is expected to wrap up within the month of May.
So far, none of the parliamentary groups have publicly supported a single candidate.
The only procedure conducted to date, is the one within the Socialist parliamentary group, during which each of the MPs proposed 3 candidates, who they believed to be appropriate as the country’s new president.
PM Rama has ruled out the possibility that the new president will be someone from SP’s parliamentary group.
A few days ago, during Euronews Albania’s ‘Barometer’, a poll conducted recently, found that Albanian citizens preferred either Pandeli Majko or Majlinda Bregu, as their new president.
