North Macedonia’s former transportation minister Mile Janakievski was sentenced on Tuesday to 3 years and 6 months behind bars over the so-called ‘Toplik’ case.
Five other employees from the ministry, who were also working at a Public Tender Commission, were convicted on abuse of office charges, a penalty that carries a sentence from 2-3 years in jail.
Janakievski was involved in a tender that saw public land being sold for the purpose to build a private resort, with costs and damages to the state budget estimated at over €1 million.
The former minister signed an order allowing the public tender, despite warnings from the ministry workers that the company did not fulfill the criteria.
