During an interview for Euronews Albania, French ambassador to Albania, Elisabeth Barsacq, gave her take on our country’s EU integration process saying that under no circumstances should it be decoupled from North Macedonia.

“In regards to this issue, I believe that we need to overcome the idea that these two nations can be separated. I know that many say that these two countries have been treated as one and since things aren’t going so well between North Macedonia and Bulgaria then they should be decoupled. This should be overcome and we need to do our best so that the two intergovernmental conferences can be held at the same time,” – argued the French ambassador.

Tirana and Skopje have been waiting for years to an end for accession talks to open up and according to a recent assessment of the European Commission, these two countries have fulfilled all preconditions.

However, Bulgaria – an EU member state – has blocked the process recently due to its ongoing disputes with North Macedonia due to shared aspects in their history and language.

Seeing that several nations are refusing to decouple Albania from North Macedonia, negotiations have been postponed for our country as well.

On the other hand, France has just commenced its 6-month term as head of the EU Presidency and the French president, Emmanuel Macron, has called for a stronger, more sovereign and united Europe.

For a long time, Macron along with other major European leaders, have been making continuous calls to have Europe turn into the strongest global superpower, which can only be achieved through the unification of the strongest economies in the continent, including an overall better cooperation between all 27 countries in the block.
