The Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Gabriel Escobar arrived to Skopje for an official one-day visit, at a time when the country has been engulfed by political instability both domestic and foreign.
Escobar met President Stevo Pendarovski, Prime Minister Zoran Zaev and Foreign Affairs Minister Bujar Osmani.
On December 9, the top US official is set to visit Tirana, although the Albanian government has not confirmed a detailed agenda, yet.
Escobar’s visit comes two days ahead of the National Assembly of the Democratic Party, called by its former leader Sali Berisha and contested by the actual leader. Berisha is the latest figure in Albanian politics to get a public designation from the Department of State.
Earlier on, the deputy secretary of state for South Central Europe Gabriel warned that there will be more public designations in the region during an interview for Voice of America.
Asked on the reason why none of the incumbent state officials have been punished yet, despite widespread corruption in Albania, Escobar asserted that it is only a matter of time, but didn’t mention any specific names.
“You will see other designations throughout the region. I don’t want to comment on any particular case, but we aim to use these competencies for the scope they were created for in the first place”, said Escobar.
