The German minister of foreign affairs, Annalena Baerbock said that the EU should hold its promise to Albania and North Macedonia.

Baerbock gave this statement at the end of a meeting of the European Foreign Affairs Council.

The German minister called for the accession talks for Albania’s and North Macedonia’s integration into the EU to start while emphasizing that it is “crucial for EU’s security”, while also being a “geopolitical issue”.

“We have to keep our promises and start accession negotiations for Albania and North Macedonia,” – said Baerbock.

Albania and North Macedonia still haven’t started negotiations for integration into the EU because Bulgaria has made use of its veto against Skopje.

EU member states will have to make a decision through a unanimous vote in order to hold the first Intergovernmental Conference for these two countries – an event that marks the initiation of accession negotiations.
