During his speech before world leaders at the International Forum of Holocaust Remembrance in Malmo, Sweden, PM Edi Rama stated that Albania was the only country in Europe with a presence of more Jewish nationals after the Second World War than prior to it.

“I doubt that everyone in this hall is familiar with Albania’s history of rescuing Jews, which is why I will have to repeat what I said during one of the sessions; Albania is the only country in Europe, with more Jews after the end of World War II than prior to it and it is the only country that turned into a safe haven for Jews, who came here to find precisely that and to survive – at a time when being Jewish in our continent, was practically a death sentence,” – said Rama.

The Albanian prime minister also noted that history is repeating, as Albania opens its doors to the recent influx of 4000 Afghan refugees that arrived in our country after fleeing the Taliban regime.

“We were the first country to open our doors to the Afghanis and take in 4.000 refugees, and while on the subject, let me also note that adversity in our country was insignificant because it comes naturally to us Albanians to be there for those in need, just like we were 30 years ago, when we were fleeing the brutal [communist] regime and found doors that opened up to us, when we were mostly in need,” – said the head of the Albanian government.
