Head of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, said that PM Edi Rama has misused the Informative Service and Information Authority on former Intelligence Documents in order to attack former president Ilir Meta.
In a statement for the press, Berisha said that the person with the initials I.M, is in fact Ilir Murati.
“Whosoever reads the message is clear on the fact that I.M is actually Ilir Murati from Librazhd and Filip Tale is also from Librazhd. They have nothing to do with Ilir Rexhep Meta, and they new about this. [But] Edi Rama still decided to misuse and misinterpret the situation in the most disgusting of ways, be it by using the director of the Information Authority or Parliament Speaker, Lindia Nikolla,” – said Berisha.
Former president Ilir Meta has been accused recently of appearing in a document belonging to the former State Security Services, which were active during the communist regime.
According to the anonymous source that accused him, Meta had allegedly collaborated with Hoxha’s secret services in order to spy on a friend who was trying to escape Albania, a crime that was considered a capital offense at the time, by Enver Hoxha’s oppressive regime.
Meta, being a senior politician, has in the past been issued a ‘clean background certificate’, which is a document released for each aspiring legislator and which verifies that said legislator hasn’t collaborated with intelligence services during Hoxha’s regime.
As a result of the new allegations that have surfaced recently, the Information Authority is now asking Parliament to amend the existing law, so that it can allow for all politicians to undergo another background verification because according to them, Meta isn’t the only active politician who has collaborated with the state security during the communist regime.
In turn, Meta has called this a politically motivated game and has asked Parliament to make public all the documents that implicate him in this matter.
