Since the start of the summer season in June, the situation with the management of garbage and waste in Durres has become a major cause for concern for residents. Mentor Kikia stated on ‘Raw Politics’ that when it comes to waste management and disposal, the city of Durres continues to be at a state of emergency, declared since a year ago by the Municipal Council.
Kikia continued by saying that currently there are no free spaces in Durres, to deposit waste and that under the current state of emergency, the government had agreed to cover the costs that are needed to transport and disposal the city’s waste to the landfill of Sharra.
The depositing process in the landfill of Sharra had begun, however it was put on hold a year ago, because the government didn’t approve the release of funds and failed to give any other kind of alternatives. In turn, Kikia pointed out that there used to be a deal to open up the landfill of Sharra, to at least clean up the city’s tourist zones.
“There has been an unspoken agreement to reopen up the gates of the landfill of Sharra, at least for a portion of the waste build up and in order to clean up the city’s tourist zones but the case remains unresolved, until the release of the funding gets approved by the government or until another alternative can be found,” argued Mentor Kikia.
Before, the city of Durres would deposit its waste in Porto Romano, however, because the latter started to slowly turn to a residential area, the depositing location was closed and is currently being turned to a park.
