Various actors of law and politics from the region gathered today in an international conference, to discuss the current challenges facing our justice system and the effects that the justice reform has been producing.

“The current challenges in Albania’s judicial system and democratizing process” – was the main theme covered in the international conference organized by the Mediterranean University in Albania.

According to academic Anastas Angjeli, justice reform is one of the reforms that is bringing about a positive impact in citizens’ lives.

“The need for this reform, came first and foremost due to citizens, who over a course of 2 and a half decades of transition, have in many cases been faced with a series of violations and injustices,” – said the president of Albania’s Mediterranean University, Prof. Anastas Angjeli.

Parliament speaker, Lindita Nikolla, said that the true challenge of our justice system is establishing the real equality of citizens before the law.

“Impunity if fought when no one is above the law, but no one is below it either,” – she said.

Justice minister, Ulsi Manja, pointed out the priorities of the justice system.

“We have now entered our second 5-year-term – the one that is focused on the consolidation of the reformed justice system. During this second phase, our priority of priorities remains the process of filling up vacancies in our judicial, which were created as a result of a rigorous and highly-detailed vetting process. Now, our focus is in recruiting qualified magistrates, according to the criteria predefined by our laws and Constitution,” – said Manja.

The conference will last for 2 days and it will aim to make a thorough analysis of the entire process of the justice reform in our country.
