One day after the formal resignation of deputy PM Dritan Abazovic, Montenegro’s PM Zdravko Krivokapic has called for snap parliamentary elections.

According to Krivokapic, the country is currently facing a harsh political crisis and the only solution would be to hold a new election.

‘After the numerous efforts made by URA, PSD and their satellites – to form a new minority government – it is now clear, that holding an election is the only way out of the current political crisis,” – he said.

This request comes at a time when Abazovic has begun procedures to hold a motion of no confidence against the current government.

Apart from URA and another party currently in government, all other opposition parties, amongst which president Milo Gjukanovic’s party, have joined this initiative.

Montenegro’s Parliament has 81 seats and the current administration could only form a fragile majority.

This coalition of opposition parties aims to form a new government that would be led by Abazovic as prime minister.
