The Democratic Party MP Gazment Bardhi, has called the news published by the BBC, according to which Russia financed this political party through a $500 thousand dollars transfer back in 2017, ‘nothing but a rumor’.

In a statement for the press from the premises of the Parliament Chairmanship, Bardhi said that there is nothing new about this.

“Questions should be asked about the towers, the oligarchs or the millionaires through whom Edi Rama has decided to violate the Constitution and who he treats differently from any of the 3 million Albanian citizens.

On that matter, I repeat, there is nothing new, while the former chairman of the party, Mr. Basha, has given a reaction. For this matter, I invite you to refer to that response, I have no additional comments. If you read the article, you too will say that it is just a rumor,’ Bardhi said.

Lulzim Basha, who was the chairman of the Democratic Party in 2017, also reacted to the news.

He claimed that DP has not received any foreign funding, much less from Russia.

Russia is said to have secretly transferred over $300 million to foreign political parties, leaders and politicians in over 24 countries around the world since 2014.

The news was announced by sources of the American administration, who refer to a report of the intelligence services, now declassified, writes the BBC.

According to this source, Russia had spent around $500,000 to support the Democratic Party of Albania in the 2017 elections and also financed parties or candidates in Bosnia, Montenegro and Madagascar.
