Immigration is seen as a golden chance by many Albanians who can’t see themselves building a future at home.
The most sought-after destination is any of the western European countries. Applications for asylum have gone up and in May alone there were 920.
Meanwhile, in the first 5 months of 2022, there was a total of 3.850 applications, a 100% rise compared to 2021.
Some of these applications which are submitted by individuals and families are being sent for the first time, whereas others are reapplying.
In comparison with the rest of the region, Albanians represent the highest number of applicants. The increase is predominantly affected by the end of the pandemic and the lift of travel restrictions that were in place from 2020-2021.
France remains the most preferred country of Albanian asylum seekers, primarily due to its social assistance benefits and better shelter options which it offers during the first couple of months since arrival.
More than half of the applications were submitted in this country, followed by Germany, Greece, and Italy.
