Deputy Dean at the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Eglantina Kalluci, said that the drop in the number of students applying for science degrees has suffered a drastic drop.
“Preference is dictated by the job market. It is apparent that these degrees like physics, chemistry, mathematics, or even biology, are more difficult to be applied in our job market. They are also difficult disciplines to master which consequently contributes to a lowered interest in students,” – said Kalluci.
According to the deputy dean, the duration of studies from the initial application to graduation, makes it more difficult for students to find these degrees attractive.
Kalluci also admitted that out of the total number of students who get accepted in the beginning of their degree, only around half of them end up completing their studies and actually graduating because they either find it impossible to pass all of their exams or end up dropping out altogether.
According to Kalluci, the high number of students dropping out of their academics should be made a national priority by relevant state authorities.
When taking into consideration, the low number of students who get accepted and the high number of those who end up dropping out midway, we could come to a point in the near future, when our job market starts experiencing gaps for particular professions.
