Today will be the last day of the electoral campaign for the second round of voting in Kosovo’s 2021 local elections. Citizens will be heading to the polls in 21 communes this Sunday, November 14, in order to elect the new mayors of these municipalities.

In the majority of the 21 communes heading to runoffs, the face-off will be amongst candidates of Albin Kurti’s LVV (Self-determination movement) and Lumir Abdixhiku’s LDK (Democratic Alliance of Kosovo).

Both leaders of these political subjects have come out in support of their candidates for mayor in each of the remaining communes.

One of the toughest races will be in Prishtina, where LVV’s Arben Vitia (who received 45.4% of votes in the first round) will go head-to-head with LDK’s Perparim Rama (with 29.17% of votes in the first round).

Likewise, in Prizren, LVV’s Mytaher Haskuk – with 40.41% of votes in the first round – will race against PDK’s Shaqir Totaj – who won 31.36% of votes in the first round.

Gjakova will be another tough commune to win, by either Ardian Gjini from AKK (45.76%) or Mimoza Kusari-Lila from LVV (37.20%).

Gjilan, Podujeva, Drenas and Kacanik are amongst the other prominent communes that will determine the fate of the candidates running in the race for mayor.

During the first round of the local elections held in Kosovo on October 17, there was a turnout of about 42.50%.

Political subjects were able to claim victory in 17 of the communes after the first round and the remaining 21, will head to runoffs this upcoming Sunday.

The ruling party – LVV (Self-determination movement) – hasn’t won in any of the communes so far, but will be racing in 12 of them.
