Young people from 18 to 24 years old are no longer voting en masse. On the contrary, they represent the age group with the lowest turnout during an electoral process, according to CEC.
But, why is this the case?
During an interview for Euronews Albania, student Gentjan Tufa, said that the reason for this indifference is the “current government’s oppressive tendencies against its own people”.
“There have been numerous protests that were manipulated and oppressed; this is why we’ve lost trust in our political system,” – said Gentjan.
Gentjan continued by saying that another reason why young people don’t vote is “the lack of a better political alternative” because the opposition “hasn’t been convincing enough”.
In addition, he said that young people avoid politics and political science when choosing a university degree, which is something that further contributed to their lack of engagement when it comes to voting or raising their voices.
Even activist Bislim Laknaj held a similar stance by saying that our younger generation should be more involved in politics in order to bring about the necessary changes to an “obviously unpleasant reality, but they have lost all trust on the political parties that are currently active in our country”.
“There’s a general sense of desperation when it comes to our political parties. Our youth is faced with an unjust and unequal society,” – said Laknaj.
