The Prime Minister of Albania Edi Rama met Thursday Azeri President Ilham Aliyev. The meeting is part of Rama’s one-day visit to Azerbaijan to discuss cooperation in the energy and tourism sectors.
Aliyev commended bilateral cooperation on a political level but added that there remains considerable potential to be discovered when it comes to economic exchanges.
Azerbaijan has been exporting natural gas to Europe for a little over a year, and Aliyev recalled that Albania supported the move, referring here to the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP).
TAP is a natural gas pipeline built in 2016 supplying gas from Azerbaijan to Europe from Greece through Albania and the Adriatic Sea to Italy.
“This is a very good sector for cooperation, with a great potential to grow even further. Our representatives are holding meetings on a broader portfolio of our cooperation in the field of energy, which includes natural gas, transit supplies, and electricity”, Aliyev said.
Prime Minister Rama also praised the two countries for their close ties, with Turkey bridging their cooperation.
Prime Minister Rama said he ‘envies Montenegro’, hinting at the considerable Azeri investments in Albania’s northern neighbor.
“As I’ve told you many times, we do have a right to be somewhat jealous of Montenegro, because you did some massive investments there, not in the simple financial term, but also the model followed, which I hope will be same for us”, said Rama.
