Every 5th of May, Albanians commemorate Martyrs who fell during the war and their contribution to the liberation of the country.

The first Martyr’s Day was held back on 5 May 1942, after the assassination of Qemal Stafa, who turned into a symbol of the Antifascist National Liberation War.

He was shot by Italian fascist forces on the outskirts of Tirana on May 5. Stafa is also one of the co-founding members of the Albanian Communist Party.

After the proclamation of independence in 1912 and up to 1945, the Albanian state did not promulgate any legal status for martyrs.

The first efforts began during the National Liberation War, in order to honor those fallen on the battlefield for the country’s freedom.

President Meta remembered Stafa and thousands of young men and women that gave their lives for the country’s freedom.

“Today is a great day to get inspired in building a better future for Albania, and to always remain vigilant in the defense of sovereignty, freedom, and independence”, said President Meta to the media.

Prime Minister Edi Rama took it to Facebook to pay his honor for the historical day.

“I am humbled with respect for those who love and gave their lives to the nation. The unforgettable. Our Martyrs”, Rama wrote.
