Ousting officials and politicians who have played a crucial role during the communist regime is the first and fastest step towards decommunization.

These were the remarks of university professor Ermal Hasmija during tonight’s ‘SOT’ with Jonida Shehu.

In his interview, Hasmija said that ousting these kinds of people from the public sphere should be seen as an urgent step in taking communism out of the minds of Albanian citizens.

“Today, we need to show our citizens who these people were, including their names and last names because they acted as the very pillars of the communist regime. And we also need to make a thorough analysis of what the real issues of the dictatorship were – as they aren’t only the murders and imprisonments. We need a vetting process so that we can stop seeing these kinds of people amongst the ranks of our political system like Ruci or Gjinushi.

And most importantly we need to make what happened to Albania known because our 20-year-olds still have no idea what happened in Albania. People who played an important role at the time should be pulled out of the public sphere,” – said Hasmija.

In addition, Hasmija called for the revision of our history textbooks, because they have remained unchanged since communism.

“We are treating communism as a normal regime and that’s very different from what Germany is doing. We have completely failed in teaching communism to our younger generations; today young people think of communism as a time when we were all poor, but everyone was equal and happy,” – said Hasmija.
