Pre-election polls predicted President Aleksandar Vucic’s Serbian Progressive Party as the frontrunner in the general elections.
However, an overwhelming majority in parliament is highly unlikely.
According to a poll published on Wednesday by daily tabloid Blic, Vucic is set to sweep 53% of the votes.
The Alliance for Victory, a coalition of various opposition parties, is expected to come in second with 13.7% of the votes.
Now a pro-European politician, Vucic made his way into politics as an ultranationalist back in the 90s, a time when Serbia carried out an ethnic cleansing campaign against Bosnians, Croatians, and Kosovo Albanians.
However, critics maintain that his popularity comes from his authoritarian leadership style, which includes strict media control and the employment of his close supporters in public offices.
Serbia’s opposition parties claim that the elections will be manipulated and that fictitious persons are being added to electoral lists.
