Price crisis increases poverty, UN: 90 thousand Albanians live on $5.50/day

90 thousand Albanian citizens are at risk of falling under the poverty line according to a report recently published by the UN.

The report states that these citizens are currently living on $5.50 dollars per day.

In addition, the report highlights the fact that Albanians who are at a much higher risk of becoming poor represent 3.2% of the current population.

UN recommends governments of developing nations which includes Albania, to offer more help to those in need, by reducing the VAT tax, fuel taxes as well as taxes for money transfers in order to normalize prices in the country.

The latter are considered much more efficient when it comes to helping with the current crisis compared to subsidies for increased electricity prices, because according to the report, they could bring down the poverty level by 75%.

Other countries that were found to have a large group of citizens living on under 5.5 dollars a day were Ukraine, Moldova, North Macedonia, Kosovo and Montenegro.
