Prime Minister Edi Rama handed on Monday to the EU Commissioner for Crisis Management Albania’s bid in becoming a part of this mechanism.
“I want to thank the Commissioner and saw it as fit to submit the letter of interest for Albania’s accession into this union, to do it publicly with the signature of the Minister of Defense and through me”, Rama told Commissioner Janez Lenarcic during a joint press conference.
Commissioner Lenarcic reiterated his support for the country’s bid in joining the mechanism.
Given the progress made by 🇦🇱 in strengthening its civil protection capabilities, I fully support #Albania joining the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. Hence today I have handed over 🇪🇺’s pathway to join the Mechanism to @ediramaal.

Rama emphasized that the mechanism came to the country’s rescue at a crucial time, referring to the devastating 2019 earthquake that claimed 51 lives, as well as the pandemic.
“The earthquake was an extremely important moment, but also pandemic. Again, it was the support of this civil defense union that eased our wounds and confronted the invisible enemy,” said PM Rama.
