“There are no intimated media in Albania, nor do we hamper our journalists’ freedom”.
These were the remarks made earlier today by PM Edi Rama through a post on Twitter, following a report published by the world-renowned organization ‘Reporters without Borders’ on this year’s Press Freedom Index, which ranked Albania 103 out of 180 countries.
“In fact, we are seeing all the more victims of defamation, lies and fake news in Albania! There is talk of journalists being taken to court, when in fact there are none! There is talk of an anti-defamation law, when in fact such a law doesn’t exist!” – tweeted PM Rama.
The head of government also underlined that he found it impossible to stay quiet, when Albania’s freedom of speech is mocked.
“Journalists becoming victims of police brutality in Albania? What a lie! Critics of the government face political attacks? What a fantasy! Ethical self-regulation in the Albanian press? What a joke! The only thing that’s missing is the title: We’re complaining about the lack of freedom because we don’t know what to do with so much freedom in our hands! I am aware that even this opinion of mine will be classified as an attack, an assault, an aggression against the press, but I found it impossible to be silent at the way some people are mocking our freedom of speech and the way freedom of the press is turning into freedom to oppress, by oppressing the facts, the people and the country in the name of freedom,” – said PM Rama.
