Democrat MP Kreshnik Collaku said on Tuesday that lifting travel visas for Russian citizens could pose a danger to national security.
“In the midst of an ongoing war, threats about potential escalation to NATO countries, lifting visa means having no guarantees that together with tourists, we might be letting in informants and murderers”, he said to host Erla Mehilli on Now.
Collaku emphasized that Albania should not lift travel visas to a country that is currently at war ‘with the entire democratic world’.
“Visas are lifted to friendly and safe countries”, he added.
According to him, the government should accept Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s plea to refuse Russian tourists from entering Albanian soil.
A similar request has also been voiced by Albania’s largest opposition force, the Democratic Party.
The Albanian government decided on March 25 to abolish the visa regime for Russian tourists from 1 April to 31 December.
