Former PM Pandeli Majko said during an interview for Euronews Albania that Ukraine’s invasion has “changed the entire vocabulary of foreign relations”.

In addition, Majko said that Albania should start to reconsider the region’s status quo.

The war, said Majko, could push Brussels towards a new approach, in regards to the EU integration of the Western Balkans.

According to him, Serbia finds itself in a delicate situation because it has turned into a “black hole”, by not agreeing to become a NATO member.

Majko also maintained that its integration into the EU has been put into question because Belgrade is exposing itself to the risk of becoming a confirmed Russian colony.

“What can be seen clearly is that drama that Serbia is currently experiencing in the region. And we don’t have to become a part of this drama,” – said Majko.

The former PM also mentioned the presence of a Russian military base in Serbia. This makes the Balkans, one of the most volatile and endangered areas when it comes to possible Russian aggression.

“Russia’s interests in the Western Balkans will be amplified through Serbian factors,”- said Majko, adding that Albania and Kosovo shouldn’t allow themselves to play the victim card.

Majko called ‘Open Balkan’ a trilateral initiative that doesn’t include the entire Western Balkans region, which hasn’t led to anything but a few meetings here and there.
