The number of Albanians declaring that they gave bribes in the public service system, went up to 32% in 2020, compared to 19% in 2019.
The survey conducted by the Institute for Democracy and Mediation discovered that 1 in every 3 citizens paid cash for bribes. 2500 citizens participated in the survey, which also discovered a significant decline in citizens’ trust in public institutions.
In addition, the survey showed that Albanians don’t pay bribes in order to receive a better or faster service, but the bribe is explicitly demanded from them.
Around 47% of participants that declared they have paid bribes, said they did it because it was asked of them, whereas 16% declared they paid it as a sign of gratitude for the service they received.
