In their annual report on terrorism, the US Department of State said that those returning from Syrian and Iraqi camps continue to pose a threat to Albania.

According to DoS, ISIS sympathizers are trying to radicalize the Albanian youth, whereas Iran is continuously financing activities against the mujaheddins that have been sheltered in our country.

Back in October, a woman and 4 children were repatriated from Syria and DoS reports that Albania is continuing with more repatriations.

In addition, authorities have built a national plan for the recipience, accommodation and deradicalization of those returning from camps in Syria.

DoS’s report underlined that during December of last year, a suspect was detained after worrying reports that he would commit terrorist attacks against Jews.

On another occasion, a district court in Tirana sentenced someone who was suspected of the same crime, to 3 years in prison.

Moreover, in July 2020, an agent funded by Iran was declared ‘non grata’ by the Albanian government and ultimately deported.

About 3.000 Iranian mujaheddins are currently live in our country at the Ashraf 3 camp in Manez, Durres. They are considered the migrant opposition of the Iranian government.

They have been accepted by the Albanian government after an agreement was reached between the US-Albania.

In May 2013, the ‘Berisha’ administration took in the first 210 mujaheddins, whereas the Rama administration agreed to take in another 2.000 out of the 2.800 who were living at the ‘Freedom Camp’ in Iraq.
