Around 13,000 Ukrainian refugees have entered Serbia in the past month, of these only 3,500 have decided to remain there.
Serbia, in coordination with the EU, accorded a special status to those fleeing the war in Ukraine.
Accordingly, they will enjoy the same rights as Serbian citizens.
Olga, a refugee from Mariupol, is traveling with her daughter.
Before their arrival in Serbia, they had to stay in different places for a month.
“Mariupol is destroyed. Many people have lost their lives, houses have been burned down. It is impossible to live”, said Olga.
Upon entering Serbia, Ukrainian refugees are handed out information from the Commissariat for Refugees, which will remain open 24/7 for a month.
“We inform people coming from Ukraine that they enjoy a temporary protection status in Serbia. This means that they have the same rights that Serbian citizens have,” said Gujanicic, from the Commissariat for Refugees and Emigrants in Serbia.
The information is provided in two languages, English and Ukrainian.
In addition, all refugees from Ukraine have the right to health care, employment, and education.
The measures will stay in force for a one-year period.
