Bekim Haxhiu, a lawmaker from the Democratic Party of Kosovo, told Euronews Albania that in a meeting held with the Minister of Health Arben Vitia they spoke about securing vaccines from the company Pfizer and BioNTech.

“Kosovo has yet to secure a contract for the vaccines. What we’ve received so far are 24.000 AstraZeneca doses acquired through the COVAX mechanism, so it was a donation for the Republic of Kosovo”, he said.

“The government, neither the actual nor the past one, were not able to secure a contract for the vaccines”, Haxhiu added.

Furthermore, he elaborated on the potential ways on how to sign a contract with Pfizer, and this he said will involve Albanian doctors and businessmen across the world.

Haxhiu confirmed that “a bridge” has already been built to secure from 500.000 to 3 million vaccine doses from Pfizer.

“I’ve contacted with Albanian medical societies in Europe and in the diaspora, as well as people with influence, successful businessman, and we were able to secure through them 500.000 to 3 million vaccine doses from Pfizer. I offered these channels to the Ministry of Health so that they can proceed with the final contract”, he said.

According to him, the ministry should contact the company within 3 days to pursue negotiations and sign a contract.
