Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic will announce on Friday his country’s stance on the situation in Ukraine.
The declaration will most likely come around 4 PM, after the end of the National Security Council meeting where senior officials are discussing the situation in the region as well as in Ukraine.
On Tuesday, the European Union reached out to the Serbian President to ask him whether he will endorse sanctions after Russia recognized the two separatist regions. Vucic said to respond in 48 hours.
While commenting on the Ukraine crisis, after Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree for the recognition of the Ukrainian region of Donbas, Vucic claimed that Serbia’s stance won’t be an easy one.
“You can imagine how much pressure there will be on Serbia now to impose sanctions on Russia, I have already had calls in this regard,” said Vucic.
But a lot has happened within these 48 hours, after Putin launched “a special military operation” that has so far claimed at least 130 lives, including 25 civilians and hundreds wounded.
Serbia has great diplomatic ties with Russia, but at the same time has its eyes on EU accession.
Serbia’s formal stance will be decisive for the country’s future and in its prospects of joining the bloc.
