Albanian President Ilir Meta said on Tuesday that the National Park of Butrint cannot be managed by a nonprofit organization.

In a press conference from the presidency, Meta said that according to the World Heritage Convention, where Albania is a signatory, the responsibility to protect and administer national heritages falls solely on the state.

“That is a responsibility of the state who is a signatory in the convention. There is no case which prescribes similar foundations in having management rights”, added President Meta.

For Euronews Albania, the Albanian President said he will respect the decision of the Assembly.

“My stance as the President of the Republic has been very clear, in defense of our cultural and natural heritage, such as in the case of the Theater and the case at hand”, Meta said.

“I hope that the Assembly won’t vote this crucial matter with their eyes closed and I have no reason to have prejudices about its decision”, conclude Meta.

On Monday, President Meta vetoed an agreement passed in the Assembly for the management of the National Park of Butrint.
