Minister of Culture Elva Margariti responded to the allegations raised by Democrat MP Ina Zhupa over the management of the Butrint National Park.

Margariti declared that the agreement for the management of the park by a private foundation includes a $7,5 million investment.

Margariti reiterated that Butrint will remain under the ownership of the Albanian state.

“Butrint will continue to be a property of the state, we’re not giving it to a private entity. Every cent generated will stay in Butrint. Investments are estimated for a total of $7,5 million”, the minister said.

Margariti emphasized that the site of the ancient city will be managed by an Albanian foundation established in conformity to state laws, in collaboration with the Albanian-American Development Foundation.

The Culture Ministry will monitor the foundation and its activities will be subject to auditing.

Democrat MP Ina Zhupa accused the ministry of “taking away from the state 800 hectares of land and passing it to a private company”.
