French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Thursday that a compromise has been reached resulting in Bulgaria lifting its veto against North Macedonia.

“I can say a compromise has been reached, a compromise that preserves the sensitivity of both parties, and I think it’s acceptable by all. The two parties will confirm this in the upcoming days”, Macron said.

Macron added that the Bulgarian prime minister and the president accepted this version, while dialogue is expected to follow in Skopje.

Meanwhile, the Macedonian government said it has received the French proposal.

“Today a proposal from the French Presidency was received by the Government containing ideas relating to our publicly stated positions and attitudes regarding the dispute with the Republic of Bulgaria”, a statement released by the Macedonian PM read.

“This proposal, whose preparation takes into account our positions and demands, will be put through a broad consultation process. Consultations in the coming days will be held in the Government, political parties, state President, Parliament, as well as with the civil sector, experts and general public”, added Kovacevski.

The country’s executive said its proposals and concerns were integrated into the deal but without going into further specifications.

The government vowed that the final solution on accepting the French proposal or not will be reached through consensus and thanked Macron for the efforts in preserving the faith in European values in the Balkans.

“We will make the decision about our future jointly according to the strategic interests of the country and all our citizens. I express my gratitude to President Macron and the French Presidency for their efforts to overcome obstacles and preserve European credibility in the Balkans”.
