Management of air traffic control at Tirana International Airport has become a bone of contention between Albanian President Ilir Meta and Prime Minister Edi Rama.
President Meta called for auditing the company Albcontrol by the Supreme State Audit, but PM Rama refuted his request as “worthless”.
The president called on the Supreme State Audit to focus on:
- How Albcontrol is managed
- Compliance with legal provisions in the decision-making of governing bodies;
- Utilization of public funds
- compliance with employment procedures, as well as any other aspect that might pose a risk to the safe and normal operation of Albcontrol.
The President said that he is “following closely the recent developments” in regards to how is the situation at the airport being handled.
Meta emphasized that both sides “must respect reciprocal rights and obligations, without overreacting in a disproportionate manner”.
Prime Minister Edi Rama considered the president’s audit and reflection calls as “nonsense”.
He said that the air traffic management issues were fuelled by president Meta and the opposition, and insisted that “everything will be resolved by tomorrow”.
