Albanian public schools don’t have dedicated taps, where children can be provided their drinking water at no cost.

A joint order released by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education, states that students should have access to fresh drinking water at all times and free of cost.

However, the only water taps present in our schools are found in toilet rooms. In certain cases, according to students, the water isn’t fit for consumption whereas, in others, it is lacking altogether.

“Yes, there is water but it’s not drinkable,” – said a student.

“They give us drinking water, but sometimes the water in our toilets comes out murky,” – said another.

The situation presents itself even more problematic in schools in villages because from time to time, water in their toilets is missing completely.

Children say that they take their drinking water with them from home and that they don’t even dare enter their toilets because of utter uncleanliness.

It’s clear that this government ruling isn’t being applied at all in practice. In fact, some of the school directors aren’t even aware that this regulation exists and has been mandated by the government.
