Albania will legalize the cultivation of marijuana for medical purposes, declared PM Edi Rama on Thursday after revealing the results of the National Consultation survey.
61% or over 309,000 out of some 500,00 respondents said ‘yes’ to legalizing medical marijuana, and 29% said ‘no’.
That would see the decriminalization of cultivating, processing, and state-controlled export of cannabis.
The survey was conducted online and on paper form from 19 January to 31 March.
Prime Minister hailed the government initiative as a ‘major achievement’ in getting the citizens’ opinion on crucial issues.
“We concluded the National Consultation with a figure that exceeded our expectations, with over half a million respondents. A high participation rate was a positive result, and of course, we have to improve a lot of things”, Rama said.
