In September, the Socialist Party will take the lead of its third term, after its victory in the April 25^th elections. But, what are the plans and challenges facing the government during this mandate and which role do they expect the Albanian opposition to play?

The Socialist Party’s elected MP, Etjen Xhafaj, during his attendance on ‘Raw Politics’ emphasized that his party’s second term in government was limited and conditioned, mentioning the rapport with the opposition, when the democratic MPs relinquished their parliamentary mandates as one of the conditions, followed by severe events like the earthquake on November 26^th 2019 and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Xhafaj continued by pointing out that with the start of the new legislature in September, the opposition and the ruling force should work hard in order to overcome the consequences of the pandemic.

“The second mandate was conditioned due to our relations with the opposition because they gave up on their mandates. The opposition plays a role that isn’t just in terms of its criticism but also its participation in the public debate. We are faced with two challenges ahead, the effects of the earthquake and those of the pandemic, which should be managed by all political sides. There are two more challenges as well, European integration and economic recovery. With the effects of the pandemic and the earthquake, we need all sides to be involved and find a solution,” he said.

Xhafaj also mentioned that the government has shown its willingness to collaborate on major matters with the opposition, but the latter according to Xhafaj, not only refused to cooperate but is also playing an obstructive role, when it comes to integration into the EU.
