Plans to rob a bank in Tirana were stopped dead in their tracks after police answered a call for help by the bank’s clerks.

Even though the robbers haven’t been identified yet, fortunately, their attempts were stopped before causing any damage.

However, this wouldn’t be the first time that banks become a target of larceners in Albania.

In the past 7 years, at least 6 sophisticated bank robberies have been registered in Tirana, where robbers were able to steal a staggering total sum of around 14 million euros.

The bank’s personnel was able to identify several marks in the bank’s flooring, at which point they immediately contacted authorities. This was the first step that would help police uncover a master plan to rob a bank located at Blvd. Zogu I in downtown Tirana.

Robbers had planned to enter the bank by digging an underground tunnel through the city’s sewage tunnels that went 8 meters deep into the ground.

The distance from the tunnels to the projected bank entrance was 270 meters.

Investigators still haven’t been able to find out how long robbers had been working on this tunnel but they did find out that robbers had been camouflaging themselves by dressing up as construction workers.

The evidence found on the scene and security cameras in the surrounding area are expected to shed some light on the case.

Since 2015, a total of 6 organized second-level bank robberies were registered in Tirana. The most infamous one took place on April 9, 2019, at the Rinas Airport where a total of 4.6 million euros ended up being stolen.
