Head of the Parliamentary Commission on Foreign Affairs, Mimi Kodheli, said during Euronews Albania’s ‘Now’, that she is optimistic about the opposition’s initiative to vet politicians.

During her interview with host Erla Mehilli, the Socialist MP spoke about the need for a general screening of the entire old class of politicians that have been protagonists in the Albanian political arena, for the past 3 decades.

“From the moment we adopted the Justice Reform, we knew that the day would come, when politicians would have to undergo the vetting ‘sift’. I am completely open to and happy to accept something of the sort, that is completely natural and should absolutely be implemented,” – said Kodheli.

According to her, such a law would result in more democracy for Albania. She also expressed her willingness to begin discussions with the opposition in regards to this initiative.

The Socialist MP also pointed out that vetting shouldn’t only apply to active politicians but be spread even further.

“In my own judgement, all protagonists of the political world have to be vetted. The way I see it, it would be fair to include all politicians of the past 30 years,” – added Kodheli.

In addition, the head of the Parliamentary Commission on Foreign Affairs said that this could be followed by vetting for personalities in the media and the business world, in order to have the entire Albanian society ‘cleaned up’, which would bring down the levels of corruption while providing progress for society as a whole.
